German A1 — Beginner
Start from scratch. Greetings, introductions, numbers, colours, daily vocabulary and basic sentence formation.

What You Can Do By the End of Each Level
By the end of A1, you can:
- Introduce yourself and others
- Ask and answer basic personal questions
- Handle simple shopping and restaurant interactions
- Understand slow, simple speech

By the end of A2, you can:
- Communicate in simple, routine tasks on familiar topics
- Describe your background, environment and immediate needs
- Handle short social exchanges, even if you can’t sustain a long conversation
- Understand frequently used everyday expressions
- Write short, simple notes and messages
By the end of B1, you can:
- Explain your opinions and reasons
- Narrate past experiences
- Handle common workplace situations
- Understand the main points of standard speech
- Write structured emails and letters
By the end of B2, you can:
- Understand the main ideas of complex text on concrete and abstract topics
- Interact with a degree of fluency that makes regular interaction with native speakers possible
- Produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects
- Explain a viewpoint on a topical issue, giving advantages and disadvantages
- Follow extended speech and complex lines of argument
By the end of C1, you can:
- Understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts and recognise implicit meaning
- Express yourself fluently and spontaneously, without obvious searching for words
- Use language flexibly for social, academic and professional purposes
- Produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects
- Understand virtually everything heard or read, with ease
C1 is the highest level we teach at Callens, and for almost everyone it’s enough: C1 already covers near-native fluency and is sufficient for German university admission, skilled-worker visas, and professional workplaces — most employers and universities don’t ask for anything beyond it.
C2 (“mastery”) is a narrow, specialised level — near-native command including subtle nuance, idiom, and register — and is really only necessary for a small set of goals: certified translation/interpretation work, university-level German philology or literature study, or teaching German at an advanced academic level. If one of those is your specific goal, we’re happy to guide you toward a C2 program or self-study path once you’ve completed C1 with us.

Our Speaking & Assessment Methodology
“Interactive speaking practice every class” — here’s exactly what that means.
Every class includes 3–4 structured speaking activities — a mix of pair work, small-group role-play, and teacher-led practice. Each student gets roughly 8–10 minutes of active speaking time per class.
Errors are corrected in real time during activities using gentle, non-disruptive prompts, with a dedicated pronunciation recap in the last 5 minutes of class.
Individual speaking is formally assessed once a month using a rubric covering fluency, accuracy, vocabulary range and pronunciation, and contributes to the end-of-level grade.
Weekly quizzes, one monthly test, a monthly speaking assessment, a writing assessment per module, and a comprehensive end-of-level exam mirroring the Goethe format.
