Starting a Phone Call

Telephone French is easier when you use a few reliable opening phrases. Speak clearly, introduce yourself, and state your reason for calling.

Checklist
  1. 1Bonjour, je m'appelle...
  2. 2Je vous appelle au sujet de...
  3. 3Est-ce que je pourrais parler à...?
  4. 4Je voudrais prendre un rendez-vous.

Asking for Clarification

If you cannot hear or understand, ask the other person to repeat or speak more slowly. These phrases keep the conversation polite and moving.

Checklist
  1. 1Pouvez-vous répéter, s'il vous plaît?
  2. 2Pouvez-vous parler plus lentement?
  3. 3Je n'ai pas bien compris.
  4. 4Pouvez-vous épeler cela?

Ending the Conversation

Confirm the next step, thank the person, and close the call politely. Practise complete mini-dialogues rather than isolated phrases.
